教授简介

Lihua Jin is an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at University of California, Los Angeles. She was most recently a post-doctoral scholar at Stanford University. In 2014, she received her PhD degree in Engineering Sciences from Harvard University. Prior to that, she earned her Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees from Fudan University in 2009 and 2006. Her research interests include mechanics of soft materials; constitutive behavior of stimuli-responsive materials; design and fabrication of soft robotics and stretchable electronics; nanomechanics and multiscale modeling.

内容简介

Various modes of mechanical instabilities can form in soft materials under large deformation, resulting in ordered patterns, and drastic changes of surface morphology. While mechanical instabilities have traditionally been considered as failure modes, a recent trend is to make use of them to fabricate stretchable electronics, measure material properties, and tune surface characteristics. In order to harness mechanical instabilities for controlled functions, it is essential to establish quantitative understanding of those instabilities. In the first part of this talk, I will describe my efforts in advancing the fundamental knowledge of several recently identified mechanical instabilities – creasing, folding, and ridging. All these instabilities involve highly nonlinear deformation of soft materials. In the second part of this talk, I will demonstrate how I harness mechanical instabilities in soft materials to develop phase-transforming metamaterials, and stretchable carbon nanotube electrodes.
